Pie-IX BRT
The Pie-IX Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a high-performance, city-shaping public transit project integrated with the reconstruction and upgrading of Pie-IX Boulevard. The work extends 13 km along Pie-IX, from Saint-Martin Boulevard in Laval to Notre-Dame Street in Montréal.
Its scope has evolved from a public transit project to an integrated project including municipal infrastructure, street infrastructure, public utilities (RTU) and intelligent transportation system (ITS) components. Delivered jointly by the ARTM, the City of Montreal and the Ministère des Transports (MTQ), the project spans two cities and four boroughs. Harmonizing the work of multiple contractors across various packages and segments is therefore essential, alongside close coordination with partners and numerous stakeholders.
The work is being carried out in a dense urban environment with diverse adjacent activities. Keeping traffic moving, ensuring user safety, and managing construction impacts are central priorities for the City and its partners.
Launched in 2018, the segment between Saint-Martin Boulevard in Laval and Pierre-De Coubertin Avenue in Montréal entered service on November 7, 2022, with the Jean-Talon sector following in December 2023. Extension work toward Notre-Dame Street East began in fall 2023 and will continue through 2027. The project entails numerous obstructions and closures of streets and intersections, posing significant challenges for maintaining traffic flow, access, and neighbourhood operations.
