The City of Montreal chose to replace the Bonaventure Expressway’s elevated structure, built in 1966, with an urban boulevard, creating a human-scale living environment and a striking gateway to downtown. The section in question ran from the middle of the Lachine Canal to Notre-Dame Street, between Griffintown and Old Montreal, in a dense area with diverse activities, numerous offices, and many residential buildings.
