The federal government decided to build a new 3.4 km bridge a few dozen metres from the old Champlain Bridge. The project included the construction of the new Samuel de Champlain Bridge and the widening of Highway 15 from the Atwater interchange, new ramps leading to Route 132 and Highway 10, as well as a new 470 m bridge to Nuns' Island. The Samuel de Champlain Bridge axis welcomes an average of over 130,000 vehicles every day and includes a central lane for the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM).

Intervia was mandated by the consortium responsible for building the new bridge, Signature on the St. Lawrence Construction Consortium, to ensure maintenance of traffic and impact management.
