Deconstruction of the Original Champlain Bridge
Our traffic management engineers and technicians were involved in the planning, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of obstructions necessary to carry out the work safely and efficiently. For example, the temporary complete closure of the four approaches under the Champlain Bridge allowed the contractor to mobilize 32 specialized mechanical shovels to demolish four spans and concrete piers on either side of the R-132 expressway and its service roads, this work having been carried out in a single weekend!
To reconcile the major construction sites in the metropolitan area, our team also coordinated with stakeholders such as JCCBI (owner), the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTQ), the cities of Montreal, Brossard, and other neighbouring municipalities, as well as with stakeholders with major obstructions on the road network (SSLC, NouvLR, RLF). The aim was to design and implement appropriate mitigation measures to limit inconvenience to road users and local residents. These measures included implementing optional routes to facilitate bypass options, deploying police officers in strategic locations, carrying out intensive work on weekends and at night, maintaining access to nearby residences at all times, and continuously disseminating information to partners and citizens.
