New Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge
A major undertaking
On the project since May 2023, our team developed a comprehensive General Mobility Management Plan (GMMP) that provides a holistic view of traffic maintenance throughout the entire project lifecycle, from design through construction. This long-term vision for mobility makes it possible to anticipate issues across the various work phases and implement appropriate solutions and mitigation measures. In parallel, our traffic study and planning team established a baseline condition that offers a snapshot of mobility across the network at a given point in time prior to construction. This portrait covers a broader area than the immediate work zone, recognizing that it may also be affected by the project. The baseline serves as a guide throughout the project, helping to identify traffic anomalies and address them quickly.
Specifics and challenges
A bridge project of this scale requires mobility management both on land, maintaining traffic on Highway 40, and on the water, to facilitate vessel navigation around the work zone and beneath the existing bridge. The main challenge remains the unforeseen situations inherent to any construction site. Our team had to contend with a reduction in the number of open lanes on the existing bridge, which prompted a full revision of the GMMP. Thanks to the team’s agility and responsiveness, design and construction activities continued despite the lane-configuration change on the original bridge, without compromising progress in 2024. The multitude of stakeholders connected to the project, directly or indirectly, also demands extensive coordination to ensure optimal and safe mobility over the long term, for the benefit of users, contractors, and workers alike.
