Employee Portrait: Étienne Léger, curious by nature!
Based on his daily passions or his family circle, the choice of engineering seemed logical for Étienne Léger, a member of the mobility planning team at Intervia. Having recently acquired his engineering designation, Étienne is a seasoned cyclist and skier who describes himself as naturally attracted to mechanical and motorized systems, which led him to pursue a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the École Polytechnique de Montréal.
“During my career in mechanical engineering, I gradually realized that I prefer to use mechanical toys rather than design them. The interest was not there. So, when I learned that there was a professional master's program in civil engineering with a concentration in transportation at the Polytechnique, I enrolled and immediately felt like I belonged there - that was the trigger!”
The collective impact of his work is undoubtedly what explains this reorientation. Étienne mentions the pride of seeing every day in his neighbourhood infrastructure resulting from projects to which he was able to contribute as part of his duties at Intervia. Before being recruited to the team, he had the opportunity to do an internship at the end of his master's degree at the City of Montreal where he worked on analyzing the impacts on pedestrian safety following the implementation of pedestrian islands at intersections.
“When I applied for a position at Intervia, I felt that the company met all my criteria. I was still a CPI (candidate for the engineering profession) and I had already worked in large firms in the past. I saw at Intervia the spirit of a start-up and the openness to young people that I was looking for. I felt that it was an innovative company with an energetic team.”
When he talks about his current role, Étienne is proud to be one of the useful technical resources on projects of all kinds. Among other things, he mentions his participation in a large-scale mobility analysis carried out on behalf of the City of Laval as well as the geomatics work carried out as part of the public consultation mandate on the implementation of parking permit zones in the borough of Saint-Laurent.
As a sign of his commitment to the company's success, Étienne is a member of Intervia's innovation committee and is currently in charge of deploying a technology that represents a new tool in our arsenal: the drone [SL1]. While he already had an interest in piloting such a device, Étienne was able to take advantage of the skills development program, offered by Intervia to all employees, to take a training course and obtain a certificate as a drone pilot.
“The drone enables us to easily obtain more accurate images during preliminary project surveys. We can thus obtain up-to-date and easily replaceable inputs, both in the design and planning phases. It will also be very useful for inspections on ongoing sites with changing geometry!”
Proud of his career and confident for the future, we can only wish Étienne several more years to innovate in the service of mobility with the entire Intervia team!
